The future of image resizing

Very clever research and demonstration of how images can be resized intelligently and also information (like ex girlfriends) can be automatically removed from photos. You have to watch this – it’s one of those things that challenges something that you thought could never change. Resizing an image is simple eh? just look at this research.

Open Source Flash Server

An open source streaming flash server. I’m a huge fan of playing movies in a flash player. Big movies need to be streamed…. With Red5, it looks like we may be able stream flash movies without having to pay huge fees for macromedia server software.

Web culture in York

I love York. It’s a city of great people, high employment, high levels of commerce nestled around the fabulous backdrop of a walled city center set in the North Yorkshire countryside. There’s very little in the way of grants and funding in this region because it’s doing so well. Everything in York seems to be self financed because people love it here, including me.

But there’s a problem with all this.

Back in 1995 (or was it earlier?), I was one of the original pioneers of the web industry in Leeds, the home and hub of many succesful internet businesses, including Freeserve. This industry created a scene filled with peers, observers and wannabees. It was great – Friday evenings in Leeds was a great place to talk web and swap ideas and knowledge over coffee and beer. There was a way of contacting anybody within the industry through a friend of a friend – and that was of huge benefit.

York, however, seems to have very little in this way. Sure we have seemingly dead Creation Network and creative wing of York Science City. But these are/were quango-esque in their existance and operate for a too broader group of industries. I was unaware of the seemingly bouyant industry of museum display design & manufacture – until I started attending functions within the city.

So – York needs a web industry group. No quango – just a vehicle for encouraging socials, networking and a voice. Not a group for lobbying – just a group that will give the industry some scale within York. An informal vehicle for people to share experiences and mentor.

Anybody up for working on this with me?

Space Elevator

A real company working on a lift/elevator to the moon. With discussions on their bulletin board about pushing rope, info about trials so far… I’m almost speechless.

ODBC Access to Analytics Data

WebTrends has much work to do to win me over. As one of the pioneering users in the very early days who knew a thing or two about analytics beyond the pretty graphs – we got our fingers burnt and never looked at webtrends again.

But they are now opening up their analytics data to queries through ODBC. This is huge. This should allow website managers to create specific dashboards on their intranet for internal customers (customer service managers, regional marketing managers etc).

Thanks to Mike for bringing this to our attention

OSX on Intel Hardware

how to run osx on a pc

We’ve only got panther and the first osx, boxed in the office – but I think it’s pretty cool that you can install and use osx Tiger on a pc – before Apple switches to intel hardware. I’m not going to do it – I rely too much on windows apps to do my job efficiently and there’s plenty of other useful things to complete on the todo list.

Tracking URLs for Domino

If you ever have to create some tracking urls for your google adword campaigns for a site hosted on a Lotus Domino setup – then you need add the command ‘open’ to your url vars before the url will work. It had a few of us scratching our heads, because webservers normally ignore this stuff – whereas Domino returns a 404 page not found error.

So normally this would work:
http://www.mysite.com/mickysite/?trackid=googleuk

but for domino you need to do the following:
http://www.mysite.com/mickysite/?open&trackid=googleuk

I tidied this up because I think this structure could break some stats packages. Hence I settled for:
http://www.mysite.com/mickysite/?open=1&trackid=googleuk

If this helps you, please let me know!

‘You’ve got to find what you love,’ Steve Jobs says

3 Stories from Steve Jobs about joining the dots

3 nice stories about events that shaped Steve Jobs – the top man at Apple.

There is little in life to get bitter about, everything moulds the person you are today. I constantly get asked about the rollercoaster world of digital media and whether I hate X,Y or Z because of famous incidents that have brought huge change into our lives. My response is usually that life is too short to bare a grudge and if it wasn’t for X, Y and Z, I would not have been introduced to A, B and C. The tough bit for team builders, is having the balls to see beyond the CV and embrace the personality and skillset forged by experience. That’s why when interviewing, I spend 5% of the time talking about the CV and rest is about the person in front of me.

hindsight?

Forthcoming: on (completely new) software

Great words from Sigurd

creating the first light bulb in the light of gas lamps

I had to stop and think about this for few minutes.

Recently, I’ve been getting pretty exciteable on the concept of things having a context. Add into that, the context of creation/evolution and, and, and … I need a coffee to think about it some more.

so good, so far from the mark

moving to the speed of sound
It’s amazing where a piece of spam and glass of good red wine will lead.

From an introduction to a group on tribe.net (a networking community type site thingy) I started looking around, read a few well craft rants about ecademy, then clicked on an advert for a ‘dj kramer’ tribe, looked at his links and found this cute, but empty site.

The things i liked:

  • the flash loading screen that teased you by listing the content that you were loading,
  • and then the funky music with great scrolling photography once it loads.
  • There’s lots wrong with this site – but it had me looking for a few minutes. Great photo of a girl holding a drink to the camera.

There’s just so much good stuff yet to be done with the web. If you keep digging, you’ll find so much stuff for inspiration….

    A&FTV

great video archive – this is what broadband’s all about
Click on the archive and watch the different clips – if you’re not inspired to do your own roadtrip style movie with your dv camera – then you don’t deserve the air you breath. Scroll through the archive and find the husky movie that so ‘gets’ the spirit of what I do in my spare time – obviously on wheels in the uk – but they just capture it so well.

So Tom… when are we capturing your fine beast of a car on quicktime?

    Moosejaw Promise

    Moosejaw Mountaineering
Whilst looking for a new duvet, I came across this rather purple cow-esk retailer. It’s not everybody’s cup of tea – but it’s definitely mine. It reminded me of the mexican restaurant in York that used to have something on the menu about how the team enjoyed what they did, and if you had a problem with that, then maybe you should go elsewhere. They’re reasonably busy most nights – but well worth the effort. Have an opinion, a passion, a style – and just stick with it for success. Just don’t employ the suits – cos they don’t understand.

In fact, someone named Sally said that our good humor and brilliant service changed her entire life.

If you are offended by ridiculous stories and silly comments then we advise you only pay attention to the fact that Moosejaw has the greatest prices and the best product selection in the world.

I wish we had a few more reailers in the uk like this.
